About DeafPlanet
Many barriers faced by the Deaf community are due to ignorance rather than discrimination. The initial reason for setting up DeafPlanet within the Merseyside area was to bridge the gaps for communication and access for D/deaf people and students of British Sign Language (BSL).
BSL Sign Club:
BSL Students attend their Sign Language class once a week and then don’t have access to the Deaf Community again until the following week. For this reason, DeafPlanet currently has two BSL Sign Clubs, one in Liverpool and one on the Wirral, but we are hoping, in the near future, to set up clubs in other areas. It is important to note that we do not teach at the clubs, our aim is to provide students with a fun and relaxing environment, where they can practise, gain confidence and build on their skills.
Volunteers:
BSL Level 3 students find it difficult to find opportunities to practise their signing within a safe environment, prior to going out into the real world. DeafPlanet will provide such opportunities through events and the signing club.
Evidence Collection Days:
BSL Level 3 students find it difficult to find Deaf people with whom they can gather evidence for their portfolios. DeafPlanet supports those students by providing Deaf and higher level hearing students with whom they can collect evidence.
Health Issues:
Presentations by guest speakers on health issues such as Cervical Smear Awareness, Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer will be provided, giving access to Deaf people to these important matters.
